ABOUT US

Education

Education is integral to our mission, and we strive to educate not only our own community, but the larger community outside of our Big Gay Bubble.

First, we try to educate our own community about issues that affect us, like health risks, events and happenings, and about resources and opportunities that are meaningful to us.

Second, we try to educate the larger community about our issues and proactively attempt to portray the LGBTQ community in a positive and healthy light, instead of reacting to negative stories and issues as they arise (although we’ll do that too!).

One of our upcoming goals is to form a speaker’s bureau whose members will appear at rallies, in schoolrooms, at events and other venues where we have the opportunity to educate and communicate on our issues and why they are important to the larger community’s health and well being. If you are interested in volunteering for the speaker’s bureau, please contact us. If you are interested in having a member of the speaker’s bureau appear at your event or in your classroom, please contact us with the details of your request.

Another one of our goals is to develop a media packet with information about all of the LGBTQ organizations, their contact information, and a FAQ sheet to distribute to the local and regional media outlets. Through this endeavor, we hope to educate the media on our issues and give them a list of “experts” they can call if an issue pertaining to our community presents itself in the news.

We also strive to educate our non-profit community on the importance of networking with LGBTQ organizations in the referral and distribution of resources, ensuring the language they use is inclusive and non-discriminatory in the delivery of their services, and to build the capacity of our non-profit network to ensure the viability of not only the LGBTQ organizations, but the non-profit community as a whole.
